Into the Wardrobe

I should probably point out a few things about this post:
1. I actually wore this outfit about 2 weeks ago
2. I just got a new computer and I haven't put Photoshop on it yet, so I haven't edited these pictures at all
3. This is the only outfit I documented all summer...I am pathetic.

The whole time I was wearing this outfit, I felt like I looked like KidRock. Maybe I was channeling him a little, but hopefuly I classed it up some. I love it everytime I get to wear this necklace (although people tend to be very confused by it).
Hat: Forever 21
Necklace:http://www.etsy.com/shop/tickette (Blogger is stupid today and wont let me link things correctly. So this link doesn't look pretty, but hopefuly it works)
Tank: The Buckle
Shirt: Old Navy
Jacket: Bass Outlet (Original price: $85 What I paid: $12)
Jeans: Levi Outlet
No shoes!

Fresh Finds- Elenowen

I've got to be honest.  These Fresh Finds posts always make me a little nervous.  I'm always worried that I'll post about what I think is a great new thing, when in reality, I'm actually the last one to know about it.

I especially feel this way when it comes to posting about music.

I mean can you imagine....

"Hey guys.  I found this new artist.  She's really creative and out there, and she goes by the name of Lady Gaga. I think she's going to be the next big thing."

Awkward.

Today however, I've decided to throw caution to the wind and tell you all about my new found love for the band Elenowen, even though I know they had some shining moments on that show The Voice, and their album has been out for over a year.

Oh how I love them.  When I first downloaded their album, I listened to it no less than five times in a row.  They have a simple folksy sound (kind of like The Civil Wars, or  The Swell Season),  and their harmonies are killer.

And they're married.

And she has killer red hair.

So really, what's not to love?

She Cooks...and Blends

I guess if we're being picky, we would actually entitle this post "She Grills," or, if I'm being really honest "He Grills," but who really cares about accuracy?

Last night I decided to make a full size version of the BBQ Bacon Sliders from Our Best Bites. These super delicious burgers WON a Better Homes and Gardens Cookoff competition, so I figured, there was absolutely no way on earth they wouldn't be fantastic.

Oh how right I was.

Let me make one thing extremely clear.  These burgers are not, I repeat NOT health food.  So, if you're into that kind of thing, I recommend that you stop reading now.  Seriously. Just stop.

Proof in point- you start off the recipe by frying up some bacon.  I used the thick cut cracked pepper kind, because, let's face it, it's the best.

Then, you make your own homemade crispy onion straws, which are of course, fried.

Yes. Fried and fried. If your a health nut, and you are still reading this, your probably starting to have heart palpitations right about now.  Don't say I didn't warn you.

Now is about the time when I patty the beef (Worcestershire sauce. Lowry's seasoning. Done.), and send husband out to the grill to do his duty.

Back in the kitchen, the making of the bleu cheese spread begins.

I have to admit that I was a little leery about this particular spread.  I'm not usually a huge fan of bleu cheese, but I decided to give it a shot anyway.  I am SO glad I did.  It pretty much rocked my socks off, and caused the husband to remark on how "surprisingly awesome" it was no less than four times during the course of dinner.

When I finished the making of the onion straws, the bacon, and the sauce, my kitchen was an absolute disaster zone.

However, I've come to learn that the size of the mess is usually directly proportionate to the deliciousness of the dish I'm making, so I didn't get too worked up about it.

I lugged all the fried/blue cheese deliciousness down to the patio and feasted on what were probably the most awesome burgers we've ever churned out.

To counteract all the fried-ness of the meal, I decided to whip up some fruit smoothies for dessert.  Sure they had a full can of sweetened condensed milk in them, but at least they weren't fried, right?

Pineapple-Strawberry-Banana Smoothies

-1 banana cut up
-1 can crushed pineapple, undrained
-1 cup halved fresh strawberries
-8 oz. strawberry yogurt
-1 can sweetened condensed milk
-2 Tbsp. lemon juice
-crushed ice

Mix all ingredients in blender.  It makes a lot, so you may have to work in batches.  I did mine in two.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I feel I must admit that I had two near breakdowns during the making of this meal.  The first was when I thought I had ruined the onion straws and I stood staring into the basin of my kitchen sink on the verge of tears for a full five minutes before deciding to pull myself together and press on (the onions weren't ruined, I just didn't have the oil hot enough).  The second was when I pulled the blender off of it's base and the bottom FELL OUT.  I had smoothie mix pouring onto the counter and floor, and I just stood motionless, like a fool, in disbelief.  Luckily, I managed to snap into action before all was lost, and I salvaged enough of it to give both husband and myself a full serving.

I'd say this meal was about trying new things, and about triumph over adversity in the kitchen.  Oh, and also about frying as much food as is humanly possible.

Inspiration Friday

1. Streamers

Streamers are sort of everywhere these days, to the point that they're almost becoming cliche. Guess what? I don't care.  I love them, and they make me happy.  I would be pleased as pie if this trend just stuck around forever.

2.  Gelato Shops

If I had my way, I would skip out on work every Friday afternoon in the summer, and hide away in the gelato shop a few blocks away from my office.

3.  Repurposed Maps

I've always loved old maps, and lately I've seen them used in so many creative ways, it makes me want to start saving them and chopping them up for various projects.  Map as lampshade? I think so. Maps as wallpaper? Yes. Framed map cutouts hung as art? Certainly.

It's a short list this week, but hopefully it got you feeling inspired and excited for your weekend.  I'll be back Monday with a new "She Cooks" post. I bet you thought I forgot about that feature, right?  Well, I haven't, but since we've been gone so much over the past month(s), my stove has been standing rather idle as of late. But we're back now, and it's been fired back up, ready to cook up some deliciousness to share with you all!

Something Crafty

To say that I'm involved in a love affair with succulents right at the moment, might be an understatement.

I have them inside.

I have them outside.

I even have some fake ones, in case I happed to kill the others.

So, you can imagine my excitement when I saw these vintage book succulent planters on the Ruche blog (via Green Wedding Shoes) the other day. I feel like they are the perfect marriage of succulents and my longstanding love of old books.

I've decided that this is going to be my Labor Day weekend craft.  I'm so excited to try and make one.  If it turns out even marginally presentable, I'll be sure to post pictures!

Blazers Are Weird

Do you have an item in your closet, or a certain trend that you really want to love, but no matter how hard you try, you just can't?  I do.  Blazers.  It seems like they are everywhere I look- every magazine, every store window, ads on tv, and they always look so cute.  They are the epitome of preppy chic.  I want to love them.....I do love them.....in theory.
A few months ago (before the shopping ban), inspired by the cute picture of a girl in a blazer that was plastered on the wall of Ann Taylor Loft, I purchased one of my very own.

I was psyched.  It was cheap, and so cute. I would wear it every day. It would be a spring and summer staple.  I would throw it on and look instantly put together.  Everyone would compliment me on my exquisite sense of style.
Or not.
Fast forward four months to now, when said blazer is sitting in my closet, unworn, with the tags still attached.  I've tried shard to make it work- believe me, I have.  I bet I've tried it on upwards of twenty times, and each time I've cast it off in a fit of rage.
Evidently, I just wasn't made for the blazer trend.  While others can wear them and pull off that scholarly, nerdy chic look, I just look nerdy.
So, this is a cry for help.  Can anyone tell me how to style this stupid thing? Can anyone tell me how to wear it without looking like a total moron? If so, I'll love you forever. If not, it will stay confined to the back of my closet.  I can't bring myself to throw it out, because I'm still foolishly holding on to the dream.  So come on people, make my dream a reality.

A few tips:
Do not tell me to wear it with red- I love America as much as the next guy, but I have no desire to walk around looking like a flag, thanks.
Do not, I repeat, DO NOT, suggest I wear it with blue, a la the picture above. That level of matchy-matchiness sort of makes my want to puke up my breakfast.

Anything else though, I'm totally up for.  Come on, help a sister out.

It's Coming....

It was chilly when I got into work this morning.
There are back to school ads on tv.
Fall is coming.
I can feel it in my bones.
I cannot wait.

Does anyone else love fall as much as I do?

Inspiration Friday

1. Robert Redford

I think I have used him before for an inspiration post, but yesterday was his birthday and you can never have too much Robert Redford.

2. Windmills

I saw one on my bike ride last night and it made me incredibly happy.

3. Anne of Green Gables

I listen to audio books at work and usually, I get them from the library, but one day while I was away from my desk, I had to resort to Librivox podcasts. I started listening to Anne of Green Gables and fell in love with it all over again. As a kid, I don't think I ever got past the first two or three books. I listened to the fourth book this week and it was wonderful.

4. New Hampshire

Why? Because I am moving there in January! I am excited for many reasons, but one of which is that it is so beautiful.

-Ana Kristina

P.S. I tried to link the pictures to their source. I cited sources quite like that before so hopefully it works. Let me know if you are dying to know where a picture came from but the link doesn't work.
